August 1971. Between the D&S and the C&TS, much has been saved of the DRGW narrow gauge, for which we can be grateful. But the destruction of much of the classic Durango yard and engine facility for the Colorado Highway Department, and the destruction of the Alamosa shops and roundhouse by the railroad were huge lost opportunities for historic preservation of the last intact operating steam railway in the U.S. This is what remained of the Alamosa shops in 1971.
