Plowing ice.

May 1991. The OY heads into the ice and snow on top of Cumbres. Using the OY to open the line was a daunting task for both men and machinery, since as Spring approached the soft winter powder snow was subject to thawing and refreezing, turning much of it to hard ice. So while the DRGW crews in years long past had had to deal with huge drifts of snow, the C&TS crews were dealing with plowing hard ice. The bucking and vibration were vicious. The machinery took a beating, and the men running it consummed more than their fair share of Advil. But it was an exciting show for the visitors who only had to do a bit of walking and snap some pictures.
